Aurielle Marie’s “Queer Writer” Requested A Celebrity to Make Her the Dress She’d Wear to the Out100 Awards Ceremony

Lizzo grants queer writer Aurielle Marie’s wish: A fab dress to wear to Out100 honors party

At a point in Lizzo’s life when she’d reached the bottom of the social ladder, the singer-songwriter went out on a limb and granted a request from her friend, Aurielle Marie, a self-described “queer writer,” on Twitter.

“Aurielle, I’m sick of seeing people wearing dresses that look like suits or dresses that look like wedding dresses or dresses that look like they’re walking down the aisle in a wedding dress,” Lizzo wrote on Aug. 6. “Let’s try something different.”

In four simple sentences, Lizzo’s message to Aurielle inspired a friend, a self-taught quilter, to do the unthinkable: to ask a celebrity to make her the dress she’d wear to the Out100 awards ceremony, where she would be recognized as an Out100 queen.

“I just decided to do something crazy and do what my friends told me to do, and do what I wanted to do,” Aurielle told me. “I started thinking about this amazing show. I saw a picture of the Out100, and I said, ‘I want to be the queen of this.’”

So Aurielle Marie, who has a degree in design from California College of Arts and Crafts and her passion for sewing, made Lizzo the most stunning and provocative dress she could imagine.

“I didn’t know anyone else at the venue,” Aurielle said. “I had no idea who might be there, and I really needed to pull this off.”

The dress, which is at least six feet long and includes a full-length center seam, is a rainbow of colorful stripes decorated with hand-tinted gold embroidery on the front and back. “It’s a very modern look, but classic,
