The Summer Scarf–Cool or Hot?
Just as I was getting used to “stylish” individuals wearing sunglasses indoors, a new and even more contradictory fashion statement is staking claim to Imperial Valley’s fashion-forward youth–the summer scarf.
Not necessarily breaking news, but embarrassingly intriguing.
This scarf is worn like a traditional western bandana, around the neck creating a downward pointing triangular shape.
Like any aspiring journalist, I was overwhelmed with curiosity. It was obvious that they are not worn for practical reasons, the only purpose I could infer was that they are worn in an attempt to make a fashion statement.
I spoke to my friend, and summer-scarf advocate, Pako. I asked what statement he intended to make, to which he answered, “No comment!” However, when he was asked whether the scarf made him hot he said, “It doesn’t produce heat, it produces coolness.”
While I disagree that my friend’s social standing can change because of a scarf–at least among the mentally sane–I cannot deny that his scarf does make him stand out. And if that extra attention does increase his “coolness,” then maybe it is worth risking a heat stroke.
For now, I anxiously await the emergence of the snowboard shorts and the summer fur coat.

About the Blogger
It’s Friday night and you want to know where you can find a typical Imperial Valley teenager. Should you look in El Centro’s bowling alley? No. Just follow the herd of overly dressed teens gasping and reaching for the U.S./Mexico border.Thankfully, 18-year-old Luis Flores keeps his Mexicali escapades to a minimum; and instead, observes and is too often entertained by this and similar trends which rarely take place outside the valley.
Luis Flores is a Brawley-born Calexico resident. He graduated from Calexico High School in 2008, when he enrolled at Imperial Valley College. Like a fellow ivnews.INFO blogger, Luis was a Boy Scout at his local Mormon church. Unlike his fellow blogger, Luis is NOT an Eagle Scout, not even close.
Luis considers himself an “artist,” and no, not just because he’s broke and jobless. This fall he will be applying for transfer admission into various universities and plans to study some form of English, and some form of art.
Luis' blog will deal with those interesting things that make the Imperial Valley unique, aside--and outside--from our depressing national standings. Everything from the point of view of a college student who is still trying to get out of the valley.

Nice blog. I think the summer scarf is worn to keep white flies from entering the important body systems. When walking through a swarm, simply pull the scarf up over the head, and, voila, the easy entry-ways are protected.
I think it’s a sad way to try to wear winter wear since, let’s face it, we don’t get one down here.
