Brexit: Sunak, Cameron, Barnier, Johnson

Next UK prime minister: Sunak closes in after Johnson balks at Brexit

In the wake of Sunday’s vote, a defiant David Cameron said: “I will be back.”

Sunak will next take over the role of prime minister on 27 April after Johnson suspended him.

“My government would have liked to have had more time to work with the European Union,” said Sunak.

“But I am confident that we can continue in this important partnership with the EU as we have in the past, to ensure that we remain a major player in global trade and to take forward our ambitious plans for the UK.”

In the meantime, he will meet EU chief negotiator Michel Barnier to discuss the process to exit the bloc.

When asked what the likelihood was of progress on Brexit, he said: “We are working hard to ensure that we get a good outcome for the United Kingdom.”
