On Sunday, Sharon Lokedi and Evans Chebet clocked the fastest times of the 2017 New York City Marathon season, as the pair won their respective races with times of 33 and 33:34.6. Lokedi was the first American woman to win the New York City Marathon since 2009 when she won in a time of 2:23:09, while Chebet was the first to run sub-32 minutes in the marathon since 2002 when he finished third.
In the women’s 10,000m, Kenyans Lokey and Kihom Wangu won in 3:42:36 and Kihom won his heat in 3:42:41, leaving her second to her teammate in the final. In the men’s race, Moses Mosop Kibet crossed the line just behind Kihom to secure the victory in the last heat with a time of 33:45.25.
The second day of the marathon was a more uneventful affair, as the men’s race did not have any new entrants, as well as a top three men’s race in the field. For the women’s race, three Kenyan women crossed the line first in 3:43:05 and were followed by the runner-up in 3:43:25, and the three-time World Champion, Elizabeth Muwanga in the final with a time of 36:17.
In a story by The New York Observer reporter Dan Mihalopoulos, Chebet’s first words to his wife after winning were, “You can see me now,” as he crossed the line with his wife by his side.
In the men’s race today, Moses Mosop Kibet had the fastest time of the day, clocking 2:03:04 and coming in second to Chebet in 2:03:35.
